Waka Ama

  1. Kia ora Herbert,

Awesome, I am glad you would like to participate in a waka ama race. I also think it would be an awesome sport to have a go at. I think I would enjoy it because there would be a lot of team work involved which means we could share our wins and loses together. It would also be amazing to race a traditional Maori waka and experience what it must have been like for the first settlers who traveled to New Zealand. Do you think it would be hard work to race a waka?

I would love to award you full points for this activity. So to complete the activity could you reply with more information as to why you would like to race in a waka ama race?

I am looking forward to your response.

Have an amazing day and happy holidays,
Megan from the Summer Learning Journey

  2. Bonjour Herbert,

my name is Cia. I am a Summer Learning Journey blogger who will be working with Ako Hiko bloggers over the summer break.
Thank you for sharing all that neat information about Waka Ama. I’m glad you think it’s cool and that you’d like to try it one day, it will be a lot of hard work. What is your favourite thing about Waka Ama? Perhaps next time you could include a list of reasons why you think Waka Ama is cool.

I think one day I could give it a go it does look like it requires a lot of teamwork, so I wont be alone which is awesome. I like the idea of working together to achieve something, so I think that’s one cool thing about Waka Ama. One thing I’d need to work hard on is keeping my energy up so that I can keep rowing for the entirety of a race!
An awesome start to the Summer Learning Journey, I can’t wait to read more!

Toe feiloa’i fo’i ('See you again' in Samoan),

    Cia.

  3. Kia Ora Herbet,

Cadence here from the Summer Learning Journey team! Great to see another activity completed.

What do you think is cool about Waka Ama? It sounds like a great social team sport. I wonder how far you have to paddle for in a race… what do you think?

I do a bit of kayaking myself, it’s fun, but a lot of hard work. You need lots of upper arm strength. Have you ever been on a kayak or Waka before?

    Keep up the great work!

    Cadence :)
